Two Kaliro district officials have been remanded to Luzira prison for allegedly embezzling over Shs 5.8 billion.
Godfrey Mutome, the chief finance officer, and John Wabwire the accountant appeared before grade one magistrate Esther Asiimwe on Friday.
They are jointly charged with Rebecca Kwagala, the human resource officer who was earlier arrested on June 12 and charged before the same court.
The court heard that Mutome and Wabwire between October 2014 and July 2022 while at Kaliro and being employed as chief finance officer and accountant respectively at Kaliro district local government, irregularly transferred, withdrew, and stole Shs 5.8 billion.
According to the prosecution, the accused persons indicated that the money was loan deductions accruing to employees of Kaliro district that they allegedly borrowed money from Kaliro Civil Servants’ Sacco whereas not.
It is alleged that the money was moved from Kaliro district salaries/wage bill and general funds account to Kaliro Civil Servants Sacco account and passed off as loan deductions.
Prosecution further alleges that Kwagala, being employed as the human resource officer at Kaliro District Local Government and in the performance of her duties, fraudulently originated invoices and created an interface file of Kaliro district staff salary deductions, which was used to access and steal money.
They denied the charges against them and were sent to Luzira prison until July 6 as investigations continue. They were arrested by detectives attached to the Inspector General of Government (IGG) office on Thursday.
