President Museveni expressed his frustration with European interference in Ugandan election matters during his address at the fourth Youth Business Forum and Expo held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
He accused Europeans of attempting to instruct him on conducting elections, stating, “These Europeans, they come to me and want to educate me on how to conduct elections. I know how to handle elections; it’s me to teach them.” He went on to criticize their approach, saying, “You are the people that come to someone’s house and start telling him how to organize his house. You start saying that this chair has to be here.”
This reprimand comes in response to the European Union (EU) and the United States, who, in April 2021, called for an independent investigation into the elections that secured Mr. Museveni’s sixth term. In that election, he defeated his closest rival, Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi, the president of the National Unity Platform.
The election was marred by a series of alleged human rights abuses. President Museveni urged Ugandan youth to focus on essential human needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and security, and transform these needs into opportunities to propel the nation forward, advising them against unnecessary diversions that could hinder Uganda’s progress.
