National Unity Platform (NUP) legislator, Ssegirinya Mohammed, and party deputy spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, have resolved their recent disagreements. The reconciliation took place on October 17, 2023, at the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, ending a period of tension caused by statements made by Mufumbiro regarding Ssegirinya’s health.
According to David Lewis Rubongoya, the party’s general secretary, who shared the news on social media (formerly Twitter), the two leaders have now reconciled. Rubongoya emphasized the importance of directing their energies towards common goals rather than internal conflicts.
“A few days ago, Hon. Ssegirinya Muhammad expressed his displeasure with some comments made by Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. We are very pleased that today, these two leaders met and reconciled. This is an important step on behalf of NUP and our President, H.E. Bobi Wine. Ultimately, we must focus our efforts on addressing the challenges facing our nation rather than internal disputes,” he stated.
Ssegirinya had previously disassociated himself from Mufumbiro and had made contentious remarks, even suggesting that Mufumbiro should not attend his funeral. These statements were made following Ssegirinya’s return from a lengthy stay in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where he had been receiving medical treatment for an extended period.
The conflict between the two leaders had escalated due to comments made by Mufumbiro regarding Ssegirinya’s illness. This was further fueled by efforts led by Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko, who claimed that NUP had neglected Ssegirinya during his time of need.
